Soulard and Chouteau

Antoine Pierre Soulard, born 1766, was a Surveyor- General under the Spanish and the Americans. He married Julia Cerre, daughter of Gabriel Cerre.

Antoine was 58 years old, when he and Chouteau bought Survey 2991 (6,002.54 acres--all of Arnold) for $14,929.92 on the Court House Steps. The date was January 5, 1824.  Just 10 months later Soulard died at the age of 59.

Auguste Chouteau was born in New Orleans  in September 1749.  He was the largest landowner in St. Louis. He was also extremely rich because of his fur trading busienss. Chouteau was 17 years younger than Soulard.  Chouteau died February 24, 1829 at the age of 80.

Soulard School remains standing today--2007.  When driving through the old UMB, one can see the school building . The Arnold Historical Society has a Souvenir 1906 booklet written by Teacher Herman Fromm to all of his students in 1906.
